1833-1856

THE family of James Baird Weaver was Scotch
on Ms mother's side and G-erman and English
in the paternal line. His father's ancestors
emigrated to England many generations ago,
and thence came to America, settling in the
State of New York. Some of the family fought
in the Revolutionary War, while others gained
distinction in the towns where they lived.1

Henry Weaver, the grandfather, was born on
April 15, 1761; and on May 1, 1790, he married
Susan Boss Crane, granddaughter of Betsy
Boss and daughter of a captain in the Bevo-
lutionary Army who lived in Elizabethtown,
New Jersey. Of this union there were fourteen
children. It is through Susan Boss Crane, the
paternal grandmother, that the family traces
its relationship to Betsy Boss, who made the
first American flag at the request of George
Washington.2 Bemoving from New York to
Ohio long before the Indians left that region,
Henry Weaver became a leader in the new west-
ern community. He fought against the Indians,
and at one time commanded a fort which stood
